Statement

I never stop taking pictures. Whether it be people, places or things, I always have my camera at the ready to take a shot- my friends and family describe it as being with the paparazzi.I am constantly looking in magazines for established and or upcoming photographers for inspiration. This stems from Vogue to the Times magazine.

The work I have submitted has been taken from various areas of my photography portfolio. This includes final pieces from my AS coursework as well my exam and personal photography projects. As you will see from my chosen images, I am able to produce a wide range of photographs ranging from fashion to reflections. This trait is something I carry in my personality. I am able to adapt to different tasks and situations confidently and cooperatively. I love meeting new people and I am a willing, polite and capable individual who will give 100% into the work assigned. I believe this course will allow me to interact with others who have the same interests as me. In addition I think it is important to take on board my peers opinions about my work, allowing me to aim higher, broaden my ideas and achieve the high standards that I aspire to within my degree. I know this course would allow me to work to my strenghts with enthusiam, passion and together with my raw determition to fulfill my potential within photography.
This image is taken from some current porfolio work based on the theme of play. Inspired by the work of Gail Goodwin, I decided to incorporate the idea of hyper-reality shown in this photo by the little girl applying lipstick whilst inkeeping the chilidish element such as the lipstick being smudged.

This picture also formed part of the Youth Culture”. The penetrating gaze of the model and the taboo body graffiti represent the defiance and anger that is often associated with youth culture. The artist that inspired this image was Jacopo Pandolfi who has worked on projects relating to this topic. His work inspired me as he has tackled a variety of issues that affect young people today.

This photograph was taken as part of the “Youth Culture” project and captures a stereotypical teenage boy smoking. The cocky, arrogant expression on his face provokes negative responses from the viewer – thus reinforcing the stereotype.

The wall ashtray is something that I came across whilst walking in Leeds city centre. It reminded me of Siskinds work as the object depicts urban decay. Visually it is intriguing and photographically it is very striking. I was also able to incorporate my own vision of what I wanted to produce in response to his photographs.

This reflection was shot through a puddle of rainwater and captures both the leaves and the shadow of the branches of the tree to create an atmospheric and visually appealing image. The artist that inspired this image was MC Escher.

I used a tripod to take this self-portrait based on the work of Joy Gregory. It was purposely taken at an angle to represent a side of my personality that reflects how I observe things. When editing this picture I adjusted the colour using the sepia tool to enhance the tones within the image.

Featuring two festival-goers, this shot was taken whilst I was in a crowd at “T in the Park” in July. The beauty of this image is that it was taken spontaneously and demonstrates how strangers can be brought together through their love of music. The Ferris Wheel, the couple’s expression and the colours within are uplifting and atmospheric and they remind me of Martin Parr’s work. If I were to give this ‘photo a title it would be “Smile Like You Mean It”.

This image is taken from one of my personal projects where I photographed a body painted model in a tattoo studio. The theme of the shoot was The Queen of Hearts, which I chose. This enabled me to explore my imaginative and creative thoughts. As the shoot progressed, I grew in confidence and by directing the model, I was able to achieve the visual effects that I had intended.

This image features a friend playing at a local gig. The atmosphere was electric and the red colour of the spotlights in the club highlights the excitement generated. The focus on the bass guitarist is dominant and the silver grey of the stainless steel Tannoy speaker adds depth and contrast to the foreground of the picture. David Youdell inspired me to photograph at gigs as his images are full of atmosphere and expression.

This image was taken as part of an exam and the final outcome for my topic and theme of  Idealism of Models within fashion. The image highlights the danger of becoming obsessed with body image and the quest of young girls to conform to what is regarded by the fashion industry as being the ideal shape, dress size and height. The backdrop to the picture however, presents a contradictory image to those of glamour, glory and elegance.
